On May 22, 2011 a catastrophic EF5 tornado struck Joplin, Missouri that forever changed this city including the lose of over a hundred lives.
Join us for a first-hand experience as you learn from a local guide how
the community has come together to begin the rebuilding process. We’ll
make several stops along the way including the Cunningham Park
Memorial Site. Joplin is now building at a record pace! Since the tornado,
over 441 homes have been constructed, 316 of those in or near the
damage zone. The city lost more than 7,000 housing units in the tornado.
At the end of the tour, on your behalf, McKinzie Tours will present
a donation to the Joplin Relief Fund. In sharp contrast to the destruction
of the tornado is the Sandstone Home and Garden Estate which was untouched. Upon entering, you are welcomed by a myriad of
color in formal and informal gardens entwined in paths and coves. Stunningly
beautiful vignettes of interior setting and garden rooms will capture
the eye of home and garden lovers. The walls echo an old world
ambience of secret gardens from days gone by and architectural embellishments
from the turn of the century enhance many passages from
room to room. This estate is an inspirational shopping destination featuring
endless home and garden decorating delights. Wander among the
Euro-stone collections and botanicals. Explore the 38, 000 square foot
home interiors gallery. Enjoy an included lunch at the Sandstone Bistro. A stop will be made en route home to get a bite to eat (on your
own).
