Amtrak to Sedalia

September 30, 2010

Rustle up some friends and board the Amtrak train and blaze our way down the trail to Sedalia!  Meet your coach in Sedalia and mosey over to the unique Katy Depot, an elegant Romanesque  Revival building and help celebrate “The Legend of Rawhide”! eeeehaaaw!!!  The "Rowdy Days, Rowdy Nites" exhibit has been designed to provide you with a unique taste of trail life.  Learn about the Sedalia Trail (also known as the Shawnee Trail), and experience the hardships, struggles, and the joys of cowboys in the late 1800s.  Eleven showcases display genuine cowboy gear and clothing that enabled cowboys to work and survive on the trail, such as: saddles, branding irons, a chuck wagon, and much more. The Sedalia Katy Depot, one of the largest depots between Kansas City and St. Louis, was built in 1896.. Today, the building  is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Stop at the Nostalgia Vintage Apparel Museum for a special tour and lunch served by the staff in vintage attire. Our last visit today is the Bothwell Lodge (Castle on the Bluff) located atop a 120-foot bluff, you can miss it. Between 1897 and 1928, the large, castle-like stone house was constructed or John Homer Bothwell, a leading Sedalia lawyer. Set on top of three natural caves, Bothwell Lodge consists of four sections built with native rock from the estate grounds. The recreational retreat features a 12,000-square-foot lodge constructed in the early 20th century Arts and Crafts style of architecture. Still in original state, Bothwell’s Lodge State Historic Site will charm you with its eclectic furnishings and informal atmosphere.  Stop at Russell Stover’s for a delicious ice cream treat.
