What a way to welcome in spring! In Topeka visit the gardens of Lake Shawnee to see 52,000 tulips,
waterfalls and much more. Our next stop is at Old Prairie Town Gardens, featuring a classic garden
pavilion, decorative walkways, water garden with a foot bridge, 31000 tulips and daffodils and more
than 500 varieties of flowers, shrubs and trees. We are off to the Great Overland Station which began as a Union Pacific Railroad
Passenger Station in 1927. It was donated to Topeka Railroad Days,
Inc. & in June 2004, opened its doors with a mission to preserve the
rich railroad heritage and other significant history of Topeka and
northeast Kansas. Enjoy a Harvey House lunch here today. In 1876
Fred Harvey took over the Santa Fee depot in Topeka. Between the
1880’s and the 1950’s more than 100,000 women, many Kansans,
proudly wore the black-and-white-uniform of the Harvey Company. After lunch you will
learn about the history of the Harvey Girls and the railroads and see the soaring ceilings and
intricate ornamentation of this building!Head South to visit the unique Combat Air Museum and see military aircraft,
from WWI to the present day, in addition to aircraft engines, artifacts and dioramas. You can even climb into one of the
vintage planes if you like.
