This exciting adventure promises something for everyone whether Bird enthusiast, history buff or fancier for fine wine and music with relaxing accommodations nestled in the Illinois’ largest start park – Pere Marquette and its rustic 1930’s Lodge. Upon arrival, we will immerse ourselves into the Lodge’s Annual’ Eagle Festival” including a chance to see and American Eagle right up close, along with a “birds-eye” seat for the Master’s of the Sky program. A toe tapping Dixieland music will end day one. The next day, with binoculars in hand, we will explore their River Lands Migratory Waterfowl Refuge and see Bald Eagles in their natural wintering habitat. Other residents for the refuge include Trumpeter Swans, American Kestrels, and maybe even a pelican or tow. A delicious family-style chicken lunch will await us back at the Lodge along with time to enjoy the pool or a match on the Giant Chess Set before we dress for our Dinner with the King – Elvis of course. A night of great food and swinging hips is sure to have the crown “all shook up”! Day 3 will have us focusing our attention on the historic treasures of 173 year-old Alton, IL. From the Worlds Tallest Man to the Underground Railroad, from 1840’s vintage mansions to Elijah P. Lovejoy our time spent unlocking these treasures should be both educational and intriguing…a few characters might just join us for lunch at Alton’s famous - My Just Desserts…trust me. The Pie alone is worth the drive and will be a fond memory as your return home. This “red hot” itinerary is sure to warm your “winter blues”.
