San Antonio TX & The Wurstfest

November 4-10, 2010

Travel with McKinzie Tours to the Lone Star State for a fun-filled trip

to New Braunfels for the annual Wurstfest celebration.  Jump into the

heart of the Texas Hill Country and you'll find New Braunfels. Founded

in 1845 by German settlers, the town is over-flowing with old world heritage and small town charm.  The German influence is hard to miss. The names alone will give you a clue: Places in the city like the Sophienburg Museum and the Wursthalle, center of the 10-day celebration of that German favorite – sausage, and in the surrounding countryside – Anhalt and Sangerhalle.  Since 1961, families have come to Wurstfest from near and far to sample tasty sausage, strudel, pretzels, potato pancakes and other German/Texas treats served up by fun-loving folks. Others come to polka and waltz to good ol' oompah music performed by more than 40 different groups. More come to visit with friendly Texans dressed in lederhosen and dirndls as a tribute to the community's reich German heritage. The main attraction is the Wursthalle, a cavernous old cottonseed warehouse lined with tables where people eat and drink the delicacies bought at the festival. While in the area, we’ll visit the turn-of-the-century community of Gruene. German immigrants established this village, which is now part of New Braunfels, before 1850. Historic structures include homes, quaint shops, art galleries, winery and rustic beer hall. Home to Gruene Hall, Texas’ oldest dance hall.  Don’t miss this Texas-style celebration!
