Key West & The Beaches of Ft. Myers & Sanibel Island

April 13-23, 2012

Join McKinzie Tours for this popular spring escape from KC’s ice and snow! Become a mini snowbird as our motorcoach makes it’s way south down Florida’s Gulf Coast. Brilliant sunshine diminishes the chill of winter to a distant memory. Beaches with white sand the consistency of confectioners sugar invite you to leave footprints, and refreshingly warm water beckons you. Stops along the way include the picturesque Greek village of Tarpon Springs. Take a boat tour on the brilliant blue bay aboard a historic sponge diving boat. The captain will show you the different types of sponge as he explains how they are best used, and a diver in a traditional suit will demonstrate how sponge are retrieved and prepared for marketing. This colorful little village features shops, restaurants and café’s, many owned by the same Greek families who established them in the early 1900’s. More scenic stops as we drive along the clear sapphire water of the Gulf of Mexico to our home for the next 3 nights, the Diamondhead Beach Resort and Spa, right on the white sand of the Gulf of Mexico on Fort Myers Beach. The resort features 121 one-bedroom suites, each measuring 700 square feet with a spectacular view of the Gulf of Mexico from a private screened balcony. You’ll enjoy seven endless miles of white sand beach, serviced by “Beach Butler”. The resort is within walking distance to Times Square, the entertainment district of Fort Myers Beach, with colorful shops, restaurants, and nightlife. We’ll use this central location as a hub to a wide variety of local attractions and of course plenty of time to relax and enjoy the beach. Discover the Beaches of Sanibel and Captiva, known as Florida's "tropical island getaway", and named among "Florida's Top 10 Beaches" by the Travel Channel. Grab a net, bucket, or bag, and do "The Sanibel Stoop" - where gathering beautiful, pastelcolored shells is a favorite activity. You might rather just relax under a palm tree with a good book to the sounds of waves rolling in, while enjoying the cool Gulf breezes. Whereas the beaches of Sanibel and Captiva are secluded and quiet, Fort Myers beaches are a hub of activity. Enjoy a drink at any number of seaside bars, or browse the many quaint shops. Spend two nights in the Florida Keys including an entire day and evening in Key West. Board the colorful Conch Train for a tour of this tropical paradise. Spend the rest of the day enjoying a multitude of unique activities such as the Hemmingway Home, the Shipwreck Museum, and savoring the local food from Key Lime Pie to Conch Fritters and ocean fresh seafood. Before departing you’ll experience the world famous sunset of Key West. Other excursions are an Everglades Day Safari, featuring Air Boat Ride through the mangrove jungle. A narrated boat cruise that navigates through the mangrove estuary known as 10,00 Islands. See dolphins, manatees, and much more on their way to the Gulf of Mexico.. Visit the Edison and Ford Winter Estates. As we head for home, visit Callaway Gardens famous for their spectacular display of Azaleas.
