Lantern Festival at Missouri Botanical Garden

"Art By Day, Magic By Night"

June 14-15, 2012

The Missouri Botanical Garden will host an international exhibition of larger-than-life, lighted works of art from Zigong, China. The exhibition is the first of its kind in the United States, offering visitors a unique opportunity to witness a spectacle rarely staged outside of Asia. "Lantern Festival: Art by Day, Magic by Night" invites visitors to experience one of China's most treasured ancient traditions – the lantern festival. On arrival in St. Louis, you’ll visit the gardens for a tram tour of the elaborate outdoor sets featuring large-scale sculptures of undulating dragons, lotus flowers, cherry blossoms and a three-story replica of the 15th century Beijing Heavenly Temple. Other sets depict historic or legendary icons such pandas, a fourfaced Buddha and the Terra Cotta Warriors. Later check into your hotel where you can relax before enjoying dinner at Favazza's, a classic Italian restaurant in the historic "Hill" district of St. Louis. Following dinner, you’ll return to the gardens to experience the illuminated magic by night. The creations are lit from within, giving them a brilliant evening glow. Animation will give the illusion of fighting dragons, dancing opera singers and flitting fairies. Enjoy street artisans and stage performances by an acrobatic troupe, as the intricate lantern scenes come alive and aglow at sunset. In the morning take a scenic drive into the heart of Missouri Wine Country for a visit to a local winery for a tasting, and spectacular views of the rolling hillside vineyards. Travel to Washington, a beautiful, historic river town with a distinctive German heritage for lunch on your own and time to stroll the historic downtown shopping district, featuring antique shops, boutiques, and art galleries in its historic buildings. In route home visit the Churchill Museum in Fulton MO where you’ll enjoy afternoon tea, a museum tour, and a musical recital on the Museum's famous Mander Tracker organ.
