West Virginia's spectacular mountains and scenic countryside offer you a welcome change from the rush of everyday life. This tour will feature two of the most scenic rail tours in the East, fun-filled music shows and entertainment, and a chance to experience the best of West Virginia heritage. Spend the night in Indianapolis Indiana and then continue into the beautiful state of West Virginia. Arrive in the little town of Elkins where you can unpack your bags for a two-night stay. Enjoy dinner at the RailYard Restaurant followed by the “Bluegrass With A Twist” Show. Start the day with an uplifting music show – “American Music Through the Ages”, at the American Mountain Theater. All aboard the Cheat Mountain Salamander! The Salamander travels through the Monongahela National Forest and numerous rock walls, including the imposing "Coal Rock". Wildlife is frequently seen during the course of the excursions including black bear, turkey, bald eagles and whitetail deer. A box lunch on the train is included. Later hop on board the Durbin Rocket for a journey through the stunning Greenbrier River Valley. Enjoy a delicious homemade Depot Dinner in the beautifully restored train depot, and attend an evening performance of the American Mountain Theater. The fun begins the moment the Due Time Band hits the stage. Performing contemporary and classic Country, Bluegrass, Cajun, Western Swing, Pop, and Gospel - these talented entertainers love to perform - and it shows! You’ll be awed by the stunning views of the Allegheny Highlands as you take a step back in time to experience time-honored mountain heritage and historic towns tucked snugly between majestic mountain landscapes. Visit Adaland Mansion, a stately brick home built in the 1800’s. Before leaving Adaland you’ll be treated to a lovely luncheon. Then travel to Morgantown to learn of the life of hometown boy, Don Knotts, who is best known as Deputy Barney Fife of the Andy Griffith Show. Learn about his life and early beginnings, stopping at several sites associated with the actor. Revisit the 1930s at Arthurdale, the site of the 1930s first New Deal Homestead in the United States, and a pet project of Eleanor Roosevelt. The Arthurdale Historic District provides a “living history” snapshot of Depression-era life. Our guided tour takes us to of one of the homes, the Esso station, administration building, and forge. Later enjoy dinner followed by a “‘40s Radio Show” recalling the days when folks were glued to their radios to find out what happened in their favorite serial and to hear the latest music. Was that Walter Winchell, George and Gracie, Fibber McGee and Molly, or the Andrew's Sisters? Leaving the beauty of the Allegheny Highlands behind travel into the “Buckeye State” Ohio. In Columbus you’ll be treated to a Victorian lunch of regional home cooking served boarding house-style in the tradition of Miss Emma Jones, a historical figure who lived on Capitol Square. Then a tour of the Ohio Statehouse will bring history to life as you meet characters from the past! Continue to Shelbyville Indiana where this evening you’ll enjoy dinner and the Boggstown Cabaret offering unique, live entertainment, featuring music from the 1900s-1960s, comedy and audience interaction all performed by professional entertainers.
